Loneliness
Loyalty
Patience
Freedom (spiritual, physical)
Death- pg 85 "so why did you have to go get killed? You aint so little as mice. I didn't bounce you hard."
ReplyDeleteMr. Kean- that could also be used for control of strength
ReplyDeleteRelationships- How Arnie would get somewhat mistreated by his sisters and Gilbert would be the one to help him and comparing that to how people would mistreat Lennie, but George would be the one to defend him. Arnie and Lennie both got babied a little in the beginning of the stories and had some relationships were they were treated friendly and some not.
ReplyDeleteRelationships-
ReplyDeleteGeorge and Arnie are brothers but also have to have a good relationship to keep the rest of the family together as well. Their mother was the only thing keeping the family from getting away from each other which would have destroyed all the relationships they had before. George and his sisters all fight over the smallest things and Arnie would run away and hide to try to get them to stop. Him screaming also didn't help when they were arguing.
Relationships- Gilbert- "I'm not going to let her be a joke anymore" Even though Gilbert took his mother as a joke in the beginning of the movie at the end he appreciated her and did not want to see her hurt any longer.
ReplyDeletePatience-
ReplyDeleteIn the movie, Arnie has an obsession with climbing up the water tower. Gilbert tells him over and over not to do it, but he doesn't get angry with him like his sister did. Gilbert knows that Arnie doesn't know any better, and that helps him stay calm enough to get Arnie to come down.
Patience- P. 12 "I could be swell and have an easier life without you" George says this to Lennie out of frustration for always having to remind him of things and take care of him all of the time.
ReplyDeleteRelationships:
ReplyDeleteOMM:
1. Lennie and George travel together, as good friends.
2. Curley and his dog had lived with each other for the pup's entire life.
3. Curley and his wife are legally married, but there's not much, if anything, beyond that. Curley's wife is a tart, while Curley overreacts to anyone talking to her.
GG:
1. Gilbert and Arnie are brothers, both stuck in Engora, and, in Gilbert's case, stuck with each other.
2. Gilbert and Becky have close to a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship.
3. Gilbert has little to do with his mother in most of the movie, up until the end.
4. Gilbert has an affair with Mrs. Carver, and ends up getting in an awkward buisiness relationship with Mr. Carver (life insurance).
Pursuing dreams: In Of Mice and Men George and Lennie have the dream of owing their own land. They talk of owning rabbits, chickens and growing many different crops to live off of. To reach this dream they go to a manor to earn money. In the process they meet Candy who adds to their dream. George, Lennie and Candy are over joyed knowing that their dream will someday come true. Little did they know that the world had something else in store. To compare with What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Gilbert also has a dream. It is to become a better person. This is different from George and Lennie's dream because it is not a material item. Another difference is that Gilbert really does get his dream. He becomes a better brother and continues to care for his family after Mama dies.
ReplyDeleteRelationships- How Gilbert would get tired of Arnie and always having to take care of him and sometimes be a little mean to him and compare that to how George always got tired of taking care of Lennie and would say many mean things to him. But both George and Gilbert would do anything to protect Lennie and Arnie.
ReplyDeletethe theme of death is throughout this book and the movie whats eating Gilbert grape through the death of the mice while Lennie was younger or the mouse he found on there way to the ranch, the puppy given to him by slim or the death of Curly's wife
ReplyDeleteRelationships- There was a realationship between George and Lennie. This was a strong realationship. George would speak for lennie so that people woulnt know that he was not so smart. He said that he was a hell of a worker so that he wouldnt get fired from the farm. George would keep lennie's Dreams of having their own farm and living on tha fatta the land.
ReplyDeleteResponsibility- In Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, Gilbert has the responsibility to take care of Arnie, and in Of Mice and Men, George has the responsibility of taking care of Lennie.
ReplyDeleteDeath- At the end of Gilbert Grape, Momma dies. In Of Mice and Men, Lennie first kills a mouse. Then he kills his puppy, and then Curley's wife. At the end George had to kill Lennie and the dream of going and living on their own ranch.
ReplyDeletePersistence- In Gilbert Grape, Gilbert tries hard not to get mad at Arnie. He keeps trying to make everyone happy in his family and get them by. In Of Mice and Men, George keeps trying to find work and get enough money for their own ranch. He also tries to keep Lennie in line
Patience - Both Gilbert and George have a ton of patience with Arnie and Lennie. They both have Gilbert and George retell stories that they have told over and over and they often have to repeat what they say so Arnie and Lennie can get a better understanding of what they are trying to say or do.
ReplyDeleteCompanionship- In OMAM,Candy's dog is an example of companionship. This can also be said with George and Lennie, Lennie and his mice/ pup, and the men at the bunkhouse. Crooks lacks a companion. Although Curley and his wife are in a relationship, curley's wife did not think Curley to be a companion, as she felt alone most of the time. Sometimes George wishes he was alone. The theme of companionship also goes toward WEGG. Arnie couldn't be left alone or he would get into trouble. Even though Gilbert had several family relationships and a physical relationship with Mrs. Carver, he still felt alone until Becky came along. Mrs. Carver's relationship lacked the companionship that she needed, which is why she looked for an affair. Companionship is symbolized by Momma being left inside alone.
ReplyDeleteDeath-In both the movie and the book someone died in the movie Mama and Mr.Carver died in the book Lennie,Curly's wife and Candy's dog died.Lennie killing mice and dogs Arnie killing the grasshopper at the beginning of the movie.
ReplyDeleteJosh K, you are right but I think I would be able to come up with more support if I stay in the area of death
ReplyDeletepatience- in whats eating gilbert grape while eating dinner arnie starts uknowingly chanting dads dead and the whole family tries to stop him while gilbert is sitting there waiting for him to stop, because gilbert knows arnie has no idea what
ReplyDeletehe is saying.
Loneliness:
ReplyDeleteIn the book many of the characters suffer from loneliness. One obvious character is Curley's wife, she tells Lennie, "Why cant I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely." This results to her trying to get the interest of all the men on the farm. Likewise in the movie Mrs. Carver has an affair with Gilbert because she is not happy with the lifestyle she is currently living. This is the same for Curley's wife, they both are unhappy with there lifestyles, unable to relate and communicate with their spouses, leaving them lonely.
Relationships- The relationship between Candy and his old dog is forever lasting. No matter how old they were getting they both supported each other. On page 45 when others in the cabin were telling him to shoot the old dog he stood up for him and said, "No, I couldn' do that. I had 'im too long.......I'm so used to him, I had him from a pup." I thought that was so nice and heartfelt coming from him. It was heartbreaking when he allowed them to shoot him to put the poor dog out of his misery.
ReplyDeleteloneliness- Curley's wife was really lonely and would flit with all the workers to get some attention and to have a conversation with somebody other then her husband who she didn't like. Similarly Mrs.Carver was also lonely and didn't like her husband. She flirted with Gilbert to get attention
ReplyDeleteDeath- Lennie kills almost anything he gets his hands on. Then gets in trouble because he over reacts about getting in trouble about what he did. On page 85 Lennie says, "Why do you got to get killed? You ain't so little as mice." So then he hides the pup in the hay to try and stay out of trouble.
ReplyDeleteDeath-In GG at the end of the movie the mom dies and they always talk about how they expect Arnie to die.
ReplyDeleteThe relation ship between Lennie and George, Gilbert and Arney, are a sort of follow the leader do what i say type of role, ex would have to be in the novel men of mice George tell Lennie what to all the time and always get him out of deep trouble, in the movie Whats eating Gilbert Grape the same thing in this relationship. Gilbert is always getting his little brother Arney out of trouble.
